Build A Road Case

Road Cases are what Keep You Going

If you are a traveling musician, road cases are essential to protect your equipment from being damaged. Unfortunately, for most musicians, professional quality cases are far beyond their budgets until much later in their career. But you can build your own with little difficulty so your equipment can survive as you keep moving forward. This example will show you build a road case for a microphone, and you can then apply the same principles to any size case for any type of rack or instrument.

Instructions

1. Open your case and lay your microphone in the center of the bottom. Make a mark on the bottom of the case that is 8mm away from each end of the microphone. Carry the marks in a straight line across the bottom of the case and up the sides.

2. Measure the interior width and depth of the case, stopping 4mm below the top of the sides. Measure and cut two pieces of masonite with your handsaw to match. Apply Gorilla glue to the bottom and two side edges of the masonite and press the board into position so it is lined up on the marks you made on the inside of the case. You should now have a case with three compartments. Let the glue dry for 1 hour before proceeding.

3. Measure and cut the dense foam to line the sides of your case including each side of the masonite boards. Apply Gorilla glue to the sides of the case and press the foam into place.

4. Measure and cut foam for the bottom of each compartment you created. Glue them into place. Measure and cut five additional bottom pieces for the center compartment, where you will be placing the microphone. Glue two of them into place.

5. Center your microphone on one of the remaining bottom pieces and cut out the center of the foam so the entire piece fits over the microphone and holds it snugly. Repeat this with the other two pieces. When you are done, stack them and glue them together, then glue them in place in the center compartment of the case.

6. Measure and cut three pieces of dense foam that cover the entire interior of the case. Stack and glue together two of them, then glue this stack to the inside of the top of the case.

7. Put your microphone in the center compartment. Put any cords or microphone stand accessories in the two side compartments. Lay the remaining piece of foam you cut to fit the entire case over all of this and close the case. You are ready to travel.
