The Advantages Of A Pocket Trumpet

The smaller pocket trumpet has advantages over the normal-size instrument.

There are many kinds of trumpets, some that play in the higher range such as a piccolo trumpet ,and those that play in different keys. One distinctive instrument is the pocket trumpet. There are advantages to this tiny little trumpet over its a full-size counterpart. Although it is not used often in performing, especially in orchestras, musicians find the instrument a convenience.

Pocket Trumpet

The pocket trumpet is toylike in appearance.

A pocket trumpet is a small trumpet, usually 7 to 8 inches in length, keyed in B-flat like the traditional trumpet but toylike in looks. A pocket trumpet has the same amount of tubing as the standard instrument, however the tubing is wrapped in such a way that it is much smaller. The pocket trumpet uses a standard-size trumpet mouthpiece and sounds much like the bigger version, playing in the same note range. Although the trumpet is already one of the smaller brass instruments, designers have been looking at ways to make it, as well as its sister instrument, the cornet (an instrument used more for marching bands), smaller and lighter to carry.

Performing Advantages

A smaller instrument can be better for younger kids.

Although most aspects of the traditional trumpet and the pocket trumpet are the same, many jazz musicians like the smaller horn because of the bright and brilliant sounds it produces. A larger trumpet tends to have a warmer and richer sound, more mellow in tone. Although the pocket trumpet is small, it is mighty when it comes to the production of sound as it is as powerful as the larger version. It is also an advantage for those performers who use a wah-wah mute (a player controls sounds by moving a hand across the end of the mute), since it is much easier to reach the end of the mute to control make it "cry." Performers also find the instrument to be more friendly when playing in a noisy environment. Being shorter, it is closer to their ears and easier to hear what they are playing. Some musicians like to use the small instrument to warm up before a performance when in tight quarters. There is also an advantage to the the pocket trumpet if a player is smaller, such as a young child. It is easier to hold than the longer, heavier, full-size trumpet. These compact trumpets also tend to make good conversational pieces.

Travel Advantages

Travels in a Briefcase

The pocket trumpet does not really fit in your pocket but comes close to doing so. It fits in a case about the size of a small purse and will even fit into a standard trumpet case right next to the larger horn, making for a good travel instrument. If you are a weekend warrior performing with a group and travel during the week for business, it is convenient to carry with you for practicing.
