Proper Etiquette For Wearing Name Tags

Wearing a name tag is a standard behavior at any professional or semi-professional event where not all participants know each other. Creation and placement of your own name tag is an essential part of conveying yourself as a professional, responsible individual. While alternative ways of wearing a name tag may not look unprofessional or incorrect, learning to use professional behavior and body placement to your advantage will set you apart from the crowd.

Instructions

1. Write your name clearly across the center of your name tag. Use all capital letters, or upper and lowercase letters, capitalizing the first letter of both of your names. Write your names in spoken order, and write them large enough so you don't have a lot of extra white space on the name tag, and so people do not have to squint to read your name.

2. Place your name tag high on the right side of your chest. This places the name tag close to your face to help others with your name/face recognition, and follows the natural line of sight from your right hand up to your face when someone shakes your hand. Even if you are naturally left-handed, professionalism requires you to shake hands with your right hand, so keep your name tag on the right side of your body so people who shake your hand will see your name tag in their natural line of vision without having to search for it. Put the name tag in a position where it will continue to lay flat and straight against your chest.

3. Hold any other items you have with you such as a briefcase, purse or coffee cup in your left hand or over your left shoulder. A shoulder strap over your right shoulder could accidentally cover up your name tag or make it fall crooked, and keeping things out of your right hand ensures that you're always ready for a friendly handshake.
