A christening gown symbolizes faith, love and heritage for a family. The gown often becomes a family heirloom passed down from generation to generation. Making an original christening gown means choosing fabrics and materials that will stand the test of time and be cherished by each generation of parents.
Instructions
Make a Baby's Christening Gown
1. Pick a pattern from any of the name-brand pattern companies or search the web for original patterns made by smaller designers. Choose quality fabrics, threads and laces to ensure the gown will last. Use the fabric type suggested on the pattern. Check online sewing sites for new ideas and free tutorials.
2. Follow the pattern directions precisely. Lay out pattern pieces according to the instructions so fabric will not be wasted. Pin the seam inside to eliminate pin marks on the fabric. Make a test pattern from a cotton sheet or other material so you understand the directions and work out any problems before you sew the gown. Plan where lace and other trim will go. Make the back of the christening gown as pretty as the front.
3. For a neat-looking garment, use an edge-stitcher foot to sew one seam when you attach lace and trim to the yoke and/or sleeves. To finish the garment, don't skimp on any step. Press all seams for a finished look.
4. Be creative. A christening gown doesn't have to be only white. It can have small spots of color. Add hints of colored lace, ribbon or cloth flowers.
5. Add whimsy or heritage to the christening gown by adding personal elements such as lace from grandma's wedding gown, trim from mom's favorite dress or ribbon to represent your family. Use special embroidery or insignias to represent your heritage. For example, add shamrock designs or Irish lace to make an Irish christening gown.
6. To add to the heirloom quality, record your progress as you sew. Make an accompanying scrapbook page with photos and fabric swatches. Share the story behind any special touches added to the gown.
