Laptop Bags For People With Back Problems

Although many laptops are lightweight, they can still be difficult to carry.

The mobile professional or student can't leave home without a laptop in hand, but for those suffering from back problems, carrying a laptop along while traveling or walking around campus presents challenges and may aggravate or worsen existing injuries. Laptop bags can reduce back and shoulder strain caused by the traditional, over-the-shoulder laptop carriers.

Rolling Laptop Case

A rolling laptop case offers relief to those suffering with back problems, freing them from carrying a heavy bag. These cases, equipped with two wheels and a handle that extends, enable the user to pull the case rather than carry it. Because of their small size, most rolling laptop cases can be pushed and pulled with ease, which may help to reduce or eliminate strain on the back and shoulders, writes Katie Foutz on the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch website.

Laptop Backpack

A laptop backpack relieves back strain caused by over-the-shoulder cases, while also offering hands-free mobility. A laptop backpack--made with two straps that secure over each shoulder--helps evenly distribute the weight of the laptop on both shoulders, Foutz points out. Backpacks also gives users freedom to move about while reducing the risk of further back injury and pain, but a downside becomes evident when the user has to take it off to access the laptop.

Contoured Laptop Bag

A contoured laptop bag, while similar to the more traditional over the shoulder bag, contours to fit the body's shape, allowing the bag to rest against the body in a way that might relieve tension on the back from the bag's weight. Most models of the contoured laptop bag offer wide padded shoulder straps, which manufacturers claim reduce back and shoulder pain while carrying the bag.
