Hawaiian Airlines Baggage Policy

Hawaiian offers interisland and mainland flights.

Hawaiian Airlines has a limit on checked and carry-on baggage. Fee schedules were modified for tickets purchased after Jan. 21, 2010. In addition, checked bags are charged for each final way of a round trip. Hawaiian Airlines has size and weight restrictions for carry-ons and checked baggage.

Checked Baggage

Measure length plus width plus height for all baggage.

Checked bags should have exterior linear dimensions of no more than 62 inches (length + width + height). For travel within Hawaii, $10 is charged for the first bag and $17 for the second checked bag. Third and any additional bags are charged $25 each (as of May 2010). For travel within the continental United States and between Hawaii and the continental U.S, charges are $25 for the first bag and $35 for a second checked bag. Prepaid baggage is discounted to $23 and $32, respectively. For the third through sixth checked bags, a fee of $125 each way for each bag is charged. For seventh and additional checked bags, the fee is $200 each way. No discounts apply for prepaying three or more bags. For travel between Hawaii or the continental U.S. and international destinations, the first two checked bags are free. Additional bags will cost between $80 and $205 each, each way, depending on how many bags and the specific international destination.

Carry-ons

Briefcases and purses don't count as carry-ons.

Passengers are limited to one carry-on, with external linear dimensions of no more than 45 inches and weight of no more than 25 pounds. Besides one carry-on, passengers are allowed to carry one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, laptop computer, backpack or a similar item.

Additional Items

Necessary personal items like collapsible wheelchairs fly for free.

Besides maximum checked bags and carry-on baggage, personal items are allowed when in the passenger's possession. A collapsible wheelchair or crutches, braces or prosthetic device are allowed with a passenger dependent on the device. Handbags or pocketbooks are allowed. Clothing or blankets such as an overcoat, wrap or foot rug are allowed. A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight is allowed. Passengers can carry on an umbrella, camera or binoculars, and an infant's food for consumption on the flight.

Oversized Baggage

Baggage handlers can't load bags weighing more than 70 pounds.

Hawaiian Air defines an oversized piece of luggage as one item with outside linear dimensions exceeding 62 inches but not more than 80 inches, and weighing not more than 50 pounds. Duffel bags and sea bags (cylindrical in shape and closed at one end with a rope) and B-4 bags (suitcase-type canvas handbag with leather and metal bindings with expandable compartments on two sides) all are considered oversized baggage. Hawaiian Air considers bags weighing 50 to 70 pounds as overweight baggage and charges $50 per bag each way. Hawaiian Air will not accept any luggage more than 70 pounds.

Miscellaneous Items

Surfboards and other odd items incur additional charges.

Surfboards, wake boards and similar items are charged at $35 between points in Hawaii, $100 between Hawaii and the continental U.S. or within the continental U.S. Maximum length allowed is 11 feet, and maximum weight is 50 pounds. Boards must be packaged suitably and the fin removed or well-padded. One set of scuba gear costs $25 each way within Hawaii and $100 between Hawaii and the continental U.S. or within the continental U.S. each way. Bicycles cost $35 each way within Hawaii and $100 between Hawaii and the continental U.S. or within the continental U.S. each way. Any item exceeding 50 pounds will be charged an additional excess weight fee. Golf clubs are accepted as checked baggage, no more than 14 clubs, 12 golf balls and one pair of shoes. The golf equipment has to be in a hard-shell case or you must sign a liability release form.

Transportation Security Administration Regulations

Besides Hawaiian Airlines baggage policies, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has additional restrictions on prohibited items and items that must be checked. Flammable or explosive items never are allowed as carry-ons and rarely allowed in checked baggage. Sharp objects like tools are allowed as checked baggage but should be sheathed or wrapped securely.
