Fix Suitcase Handles That Stick

Rough handling of your bags at the airport may damage your luggage.

Well ahead of your next trip, take time to inspect your luggage -- particularly the handle -- for any damage. Suitcase handles are one of the main problem areas, as they get stuck from time to time. They are prone to dents that prevent them from extending or retracting. If you find that your handle won't budge, don't despair. You may be able to easily fix the problem using a few household tools.

Instructions

Repair Handle

1. Open your suitcase and unzip the lining. This will reveal the metal skeleton of your suitcase, including the bars of the handle.

2. Examine the handle and determine where the dent is that's making it stick.

3. Use the hammer to carefully unbend the bars of your handle by pounding lightly, but firmly, on the outer part of the dent until the bar is as straight as possible. If the handle is already extended and won't retract, try to unbend it using the same method.

4. Test your work by trying to extend and retract the handle. If it still doesn't work, move on to Section 2.

Replace Handle

5. Contact your luggage manufacturer to determine if you're entitled to a replacement handle under your warranty. If not, you can buy a new handle directly from the company, or elsewhere.

6. Remove the screws and bolts that hold your damaged handle in place inside the suitcase.

7. Remove the handle entirely from the suitcase and discard it.

8. Install the replacement handle in your suitcase and screw it in place. Ensure that you tighten the screws as much as possible.

9. Test the new handle by extending and retracting it a few times. If all is well, zip up the lining to cover the metal parts.
