Leather shoes require extra care to stay clean and stylish.
Light-colored leather shoes are an everyday staple in many closets, as their professional look and neutral tone make them well suited for work and casual wear alike. But they are quite susceptible to stains and scuffs if left untreated at purchase. Light-colored leather shoes can be protected with some immediate preparation as well as post-wear care, allowing them to maintain their luster and quality for much longer.
Instructions
After Purchase
1. Set the shoes on a piece of newspaper, in a well-ventilated area.
2. Dampen a cloth or paper towel with warm water, and gently wipe down the shoes. This will remove any dirt and debris that could otherwise be sealed onto the leather exterior.
3. Allow the shoes to dry completely. Leave them to dry by air, and absorb any excess dampness with a paper towel.
4. Spray the shoes with a water and stain protector. Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the shoes, and coat them evenly. Select a water and stain protector specific to leather shoes. Oil-based protectors for general shoe wear are typically too dark for light-colored shoes and can stain the leather.
5. Allow the shoes to dry, and apply a second coat of protector. New leather requires more protection and durability, as it is very soft and freshly dyed. Leave the shoes to thoroughly dry before wearing them.
Post-Wear Care
6. Stuff wet shoes with newspaper, and allow them to air-dry. The newspaper will help the leather to maintain its shape, while air drying prevents any discoloration or scuffs from scrubbing with a towel or other material.
7. Apply a shoe conditioner to the leather and let it dry. Apply a leather-specific conditioner to the shoe. This is done in the same manner as applying a water and stain guard. Shoe conditioner will protect aging leather from wrinkles, cracks and discoloration that is possible with ample wear and exposure to the elements.
8. Store the shoes on a shoe tree. This will help the shoes to keep their shape when they are not being worn.
9. Polish the shoes once or twice a month. Brush the shoes with a shoe brush to remove and dust and dirt, then apply leather shoe polish with a rag in small circular motions. Follow up with a polishing brush, buffing the shoes in quick downward strokes. Along with conditioning, this will help to keep the leather moisturized.
10. Reapply water and stain guard every one to two months, or less if facing ample amounts of rain or snow.
