Business Attire Etiquette In Great Britain

What you wear to an interview and what you wear to work shows that you have proper business etiquette. Aside from looking presentable, being properly dressed means that you take your job seriously and that you are a professional. Knowing what the business attire etiquette is when doing business in Great Britain goes hand-in-hand with knowing about British business etiquette. Although business attire rules are somewhat relaxed in England, dressing conservatively is still important for both men and women.

Attire for Men

Men should wear crisp shirts with no pockets. If this is unavoidable, your pockets should always be kept empty. Dark suits in fabric such as wool or wool blends that are black, navy or gray may be worn. Men should also wear ties that are patterned or that are one solid color. Wearing striped ties should be avoided because British "regimental" neckties have a variety of striped patterns, each representing a different institution. If you wear a tie that resembles a striped regimental pattern, it could be perceived as tactless. You can also carry a briefcase if needed. Men wear laced, leather shoes instead of loafers with dark socks that are midcalf length so no skin is visible when you down. You should make sure that your clothes are clean and pressed and your shoes are polished.

Attire for Women

Although women can wear business suits in dark colors, businesswomen can also wear conservative skirt suits in the same fabric as men. However, women can also wear suits of good quality micro fiber. Maintaining a conservative image is important, so the length of the skirt should be below the knee or no more than an inch or two above the knee. Additionally, you should avoid loud colors and busy patterns. Wearing a fine gauge, good quality knit sweater over your shirt is also appropriate for both men and women. Women can carry a small purse and a briefcase if needed or a business-like tote bag. Women can wear flat shoes or closed toe pumps with plain, sheer hosiery with no patterns and in neutral colors that complement the suit being worn. If you wear makeup, keep it conservative by not applying too much and by using light colors. Like men, women should make sure that clothes are clean and pressed and shoes are polished.

What to Avoid

Some of the things that should be avoided are basic for most cultures. Both men and women should avoid wearing loud colors, pastels and busy prints. Both men and women should avoid wearing sandals and sneakers and, of course, flip flops. Women should not wear stilettos or chunky platform shoes. And of course, very short skirts, shorts, jeans, and sweat pants should not be worn. Avoid looking messy when doing business by keeping your clothes and your hair neat at all times. Both men and women should avoid wearing excessive jewelry, although wearing a watch is acceptable. In addition, you should not have dirty fingernails, so keep them clean and trimmed. Furthermore, men and women should make sure that there are no buttons missing from your clothing, that zippers are working properly and that all the price tags from new clothes are removed.
