Each year, Indiana draws tourists from around the world for its attractions and events. Parents visiting the state and those who live there year-round can find fun activities for kids located across Indiana's more than 35,000 square miles. The activities for children located in the Hoosier state include options that appeal to all age groups, including toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged kids.
Fisher's Freedom Festival
The Fisher's Freedom Festival is an annual event sponsored by the city of Fishers, Indiana, a community 21 miles northeast of Indianapolis. The city of Fisher has sponsored the festival since 1988. The festival typically occurs over a Saturday and Sunday at the end of August. Among the festivities at the event are activities specifically designed for kids.
Children at the Fisher's Freedom Festival have the opportunity to participate in a parade, where children dress in costumes and compete for prizes. In 2009, 350 youngsters marched in the parade. Children can also run in a 5K race especially for them, or walk with their parents in a 2-mile family event. At the children's tent, kids enjoy crafts and other activities, such as face-painting.
Fisher's Freedom Festival is free to attend though some activities may require a fee. Donations are also accepted. Festivities occur throughout the town of Fisher; the city publishes a paper and online schedules each year.
Fort Wayne Children's Zoo
The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is on Sherman Boulevard in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This well-known children's attraction opened in 1952. Children can view more than 1,500 animals during their visit to the facility. A featured exhibit, the Australian Adventure, allows children to get close to kangaroos and take tour a coral reef aquarium.
For kids, the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo also offers rides, including a train and a carousel that features endangered species of animals rather than horses. Children can also enjoy pony rides at the zoo.
The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is open daily from late April into early autumn. General admission for the 2010 season was $13. Rides carry an additional fee. Children and senior citizens receive discounted admission rates. The zoo rents strollers, wagons and wheelchairs. Free, on-site parking is available.
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is on North Meridian in downtown Indianapolis. The museum opened in 1925 and has received rankings as one of the best children's museums in the nation from publications like "The Wall Street Journal," "The USA Today" and "Smithsonian Magazine." The collection housed at the museum includes more than 105,000 artifacts.
The exhibits at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis encourage children to learn through hands-on play. In the Playscape area, toddlers and preschoolers can explore an indoor playground with age-appropriate toys. The Science Zone allows older kids to conduct scientific experiments.
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is open daily from March through Labor Day and Tuesday through Sunday the remainder of the year. The museum closes on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. General admission is $15.50 as of November 2010. Children and senior citizens receive discounted admission rates. The museum rents wheelchairs. Free parking is available on-site.
