A gift bag should be filled with pleasant surprises.
A gift bag given by itself is . . . a gift bag. Given as part of a themed party or holiday, it assumes a new identity. For a pirate party, it's a swag bag, full of stolen loot; but for a little girl's princess party, it may be presented as a magical surprise -- a "Godmother's gift bag." What you call your gift bag depends on the theme of your party and the age of your gift recipient.
Child's Birthday
A gift bag for a boy's birthday party might be called a fireman's pail, a treasure box, an astronaut's kit, a knight's satchel or a cowboy's saddle bag. A little girl's gift bag may be shaped like a fairy purse, a magic princess crown, a "frog's mouth" or a makeup bag filled with toy cosmetics.
Adult's Birthday
A gift bag for a man's birthday may be a "golf bag," a grownup version of a "swag bag" filled with plunder, a "tool kit," "briefcase" or adult cowboy satchel. A gift bag for a woman's birthday bag might be shaped like a purse, complete with makeup and small accessories; a dress; or even a high-heeled shoe. You might refer to a makeup bag as a "paintbox."
Holiday
There are a world of possible names for holiday gift bags. A Christmas gift bag could be a "Magi's gift," "Santa's bag" or an "elf's house." A St. Patrick's Day bag could be "St. Patrick's pack" or a "leprechaun's purse." Thanksgiving bags could be "pilgrim's baskets" or "horns of plenty."
Special Occasion
Special occasion gift bags might be an anniversary "cedar chest" or "photo box"; a graduation gift bag might be a "sheepskin"; gift bags for a sports victory celebration might be made out of netting, to represent a goal, and be called "nothing but net bags." A wedding gift bag with netting might be called "bride's veils," and a gift bag for a baby shower might be made of pinned cloth diapers or baby all-in-ones filled with gifts, and be dubbed "diaper bags" or "baby bags."
